Almost Halfway Through the Generation and We’re Still Awaiting Greatness

Devin Rardin: This generation has been somewhat disappointing in terms of exclusive games, and now, as we approach its second half, there is much to prove.

Xbox is still waiting for greatness. PS5 on the other hand has had plenty of great games with more on the way.

GhostScholar700d ago

Yea PlayStation has had great games but the only game they’ve had that took advantage of new systems is astros playroom which to this point is my favorite exclusive of any platform this gen.

andy85700d ago

You can't say Rift Apart didn't

MrBaskerville700d ago (Edited 700d ago )

No Returnal, Death Loop, Rift Apart, Demons Souls or FFXVI?

Dead Space Remake? Last of Us Remake? Soon Death Stranding 2 and Spiderman 2.

ChasterMies700d ago

There’s the false notion that any PS5/PS4 game didn’t take advantage of the power of the PS5. This is wrong. Games like “Spider-Man: Miles Morales” and “Horizon: Forbidden West” look amazing on PS5. Don’t put Xbox’s failures on PlayStation.

shinoff2183700d ago

Ghostscholar numerous games use haptic. Hell nba 2k 23 does

blackblades700d ago

Bruh was that necessary we get it. I'm playing multiple games as well, I'm not worried about things other people are. I'm playing at my own pace with my backlog, should see my friend he was on ps3 the entire ps4 era and now on ps4 doing the ps5 era. As for the title there are ps5 only games and there many good games in general that should be people focus

piroh700d ago

Its a comment section although sorry for it to be so bulky

Firebird360700d ago

While they've absolutely done leaps and bounds beyond what Ms has released. Let's be real, ps5 exclusives are minimal at best.

Soldierone699d ago

I don't know why this statement is so hated. Have PS5 games been good? Yes. Have they had more than Xbox? Yes, but how is that an achievement when Xbox has close to no notable games.....

specialguest699d ago

I feel like there's a lack of games that blew me away when compared to the PS3 era. It was a giant leap from visual impact, gameplay, and more coming from the PS2 to the PS3. TLOU, Uncharted, MGS4, KZ, etc could never be possible on the PS2. With the PS5 compared to PS4, the games are similar, but with higher res and framerates

mjchitown699d ago

you a xbox hater so no surprise there

JackBNimble699d ago

That's debatable and completely subjective too begin with

Berenger699d ago (Edited 699d ago )

I'm telling you bro, MS must be paying a TON of people a TON of money to keep downplaying the PS5 cuz this nonsense is bananas lol Playstation has been pumping out heat since launch day! Lol It's a lull in 1st party this year only lol
Even then, they still had PSVR2 launch, Forspoken (flopped) , and FF16 (megahit)
Spiderman 2 will be huge but people really do try to deflect Xboxs lack of 1st party titles to other systems lol
It's obnoxious and absurd.
2020 was actually Sony's biggest year when you factor in the big games they also had on PS4
Nioh 2
Ff7R
Tlou2
Ghost of Tsushima
Then launched PS5 with:
Godfall (solid if only above avg)
Miles Morales
Sackboy
Demon's Souls

CS7699d ago

The notion that any criticism of Sony is MS paying is absurd.

I’ve only owned playstation consoles until this gen and I can tell you, I feel disappointed by the PS5’s output.

There is no games right now that feel like a generational leap that we’ve been accustomed to. There is nothing on the level of MGS4, Uncharted & Killzone with generational comparison PS2>PS3.

From PS4>PS5 I feel like all we’ve gotten is uprezed games.

I didnt buy a console to play uprezed games. I came for new experiences that were not possible on last gen.

PS5 has NOT delivered that.

And I don’t give a rat’s behind about xbox. They’re garbage and obviously worse than Sony.

goldwyncq699d ago

The PS5 is yet to have its God of War or Uncharted — a new IP for which the generation will be remembered by.

Fearmonkey699d ago

Ps5 definitely has some great games, and there has been great multiplats as well, but Xbox hasnt had a good time of it because they started so late in caring about exclusives. They have alot of big titles in development from their buyimg sprees, lets hope they turn out great and not like a forspoken/redfall. I miss the old xbox exclusives, i wish they would revisit those.

TheEroica699d ago

Laughable comment. Ps5 doesn't have a single console seller in their entire lineup. Not one.

Spider-Man 2 will be triumphant when it releases. There's no other way around it.

MS better hope SF delivers big for them after the Midfall's failure Bethesda needs a big win under their belt also. I know, I know there's allot of hype going into SF. I decided to temper and take a back seat on all the praise and hype until after the marketing and after the previews, remain skeptical. After CD Project Red smoke and Mirrors marketing even Redfalls lies and preview I know longer fall for any hype especially for the big anticipated games. I can't stop others for going crazy and hyping it, come next month when marketing, previews and certain embargoes being lifted SF will most likely be in the limelight again I'll take a wait and see approach.

Anyway 3rd party is finally starting to shine this year. Though I'm noticing PS5 and X only games are struggling with with either resolution or frames. Makes me question the the machines true capabilities. Notice how ifs it's cross gen it can handle 4k 60 no issues current gen only? Seemingly struggles. Here's hoping the rumored PS5 pro is real it's suppose to be a beast. 8k capabilities, runs, cooler, smaller die and better overall specs like accelerated RT and consistent frames rates.suppose to release late 2024. It's a hot rumor so it's possible it's highly, highly legit. I'm all about power and that sounds super exciting for me. It sounds like a new console imo.

darthv72700d ago

If the P5P is true... it will not be that much different than the SX is now. Meaning the games will still have to run on the lowest common denominator... the base P5 like SX games do now with the SS. I dont know how i feel about a Pro... on one hand I like new hardware, on the other I think we are still getting crossgen games and until both sides fully drop the 8th gen, we wont really know what the 9th can truly deliver as it is. And then they want to go and add another layer on top of that???

I just dont know anymore.

Spiderman and Starfield are what i will be playing this fall... that much I do know.

Lightning77700d ago

"If the P5P is true... it will not be that much different than the SX is now."

According to the rumor it's suppose to outshine the X. Of course the rumored specs on paper sound great, this isn't our first rodeo every new machine on paper sound great but sometimes the reality it's not all that cracked up to be or it's over sold (like MS did with X|S)

We have to wait and see.

"we wont really know what the 9th can truly deliver as it is. And then they want to go and add another layer on top of that???"

As I stated up top 3rd party has had either performance issues or resolution issues. The issues could get ironed out as the gen goes on. Of course that's just 3rd party we know 1st party will get the most out of the consoles.

I also understand I'm in the minority for wanting a PS5 Pro as we've hardly seen current gen stuff as is. I know most will be pissed off hearing a pro model. I just can't help but get excited.

darthv72700d ago (Edited 700d ago )

^^I see you completely missed why I said what i said. And Im not talking of the specs between a Pro and SX. The Pro could be 10x more powerful than a Series X... that wont stop it from being tethered to the base PS5. Just like how people say the SS is holding the SX back... what do you think they will say about the 5Pro?

A slim unit i can see... a Pro doesnt make much sense when they already outshine a 12tf SX with the 10tf specs they have. its all about the talent and the tools more than the specs.

Lightning77700d ago

If that's the case then what's the point of generations?

Will the new PS6 and the new X be real generations or just sold that way especially after the PS5 pro news?

Don't get me wrong I'm a sucker for new hardware but calling anything new gen this point going forward is severely misleading imo. Since everything going forward will mostly tether to the older versions.

Like I said on paper it sounds impressive and who knows if it'll be limited by PS5 base. I know devs won't be too pleased having to program for yet another console. More work load for them.

LeeFender700d ago (Edited 700d ago )

8K in my opinion is a complete waste. Both consoles are having issues even doing 4K at decent frames let alone at 8K. Give me more stable frames at 4K and that's fine. Spiderman 2 looks like hot doo doo visually imo. The best looking game on PS5 is Demon's Souls Remake and Ratchet. God of War Ragnarok is a fantastic game but it's just a cross gen sequel with a ton of visual limitations. Horizon Forbidden West while a pretty looking game is enormously a bore fest o play through.

Wolverine is the next big game I have hopes for from the PS camp, both gameplay and visually. And of course whatever Naughty Dog makes.

Starfield is looking pretty good, but it won't be a looker and I'll be playing thst on PC. Fable based on the video clip they showed is probably the best looking game I've seen in a long while. Hellblade 2 is long overdue and looks like a downgraded cinematic mess.

Awoved looks OK visually, but nothing next gen about it and is relying more on story and writing from what it seems. Clockwork looks fun, but not really visually spectacular.

Whatever The Coalition is making for Xbox/PC will be the next big thing in visuals along with Naughty Dog for PS5. Some developers always push visual boundaries, others just make good games but not visually stunning.

Shane Kim700d ago

Good games? You just shat on the entire list you made. I wonder what you play couse nothing seems to suffice.

P_Bomb700d ago (Edited 700d ago )

“Spiderman 2 looks like hot doo doo visually imo.”

I disagree there. Looks as solid as they come from what I’ve seen.

“8K in my opinion is a complete waste. Both consoles are having issues even doing 4K at decent frames let alone at 8K.”

Agree on this. Master what you’ve got before asking me to buy another TV.

Godmars290700d ago

Sadly, the failure of your claim is in the "2".

I mean, while MS is hardly making strides by buying up the industry and calling that 1st party, Sony has done little to justify a next gen jump either.

shinoff2183700d ago

I'll be honest the loading was enough for me. While nicer to look at idgaf about 4k this and 60 frames that. I enjoy the no loading

FinalFantasyFanatic699d ago

I'm still finding it hard to justify buying a PS5 at this point, nothing has wowed me enough yet, and I've ended up buying more Steam games if anything.

shinoff2183700d ago

Starfields gonna be dope idc what anyone says. If you enjoyed Elder scrolls or fallout and like sci fi you'll like it

DarXyde699d ago (Edited 699d ago )

A wait and see approach is always a good choice when it comes to gaming. Much better that you're interested and pleasantly surprised by how great it is, than to be hyping it up to unrealistic expectations and be furious when it isn't the second coming of Jesus.

I don't really think a PS5 Pro is necessary. I don't believe we've hit the real limitations of these machines and frankly, performance modes still look great. If it's as simple as developing for PS5 and turning up asset quality and frame rates, cool. But if it becomes a weird balancing act with RAM like the Series S, I highly advise against that. I have to wonder how much you'd get out of it when multiplatform games would require Series S versions and first party exclusives are kind of sporadic.

I totally understood the point of the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X. PS4 and Xbox One were both underpowered at launch. I don't really see the need to go the refresh route this generation, honestly.

Christopher700d ago

I'm fine. I think we should definitely praise high moments, but those tend to only come once a generation and not many more times. Years with tons of great games are the exception, not the rule. I think people expect way too much. I'm not saying we should give a pass to lazy or boring games, but to ask for them to all be at the level of the greats or to have so many greats every year for first-party studios? That's hard to do.

MrBaskerville700d ago

This year has to be one of those high moments, since Tear Of Kingdom (of System Shock Remake) it's been and continues to be big game after big game releasing straight until christmas.

MrBaskerville699d ago

Since there's dislikes, is it a bad year? I thought it was shaping up to be one of the best in ages:
Dead Space Remake
Octopath Traveller 2
Hogwarts Legacy
Re4Remake
SS Remake
Tears of Kingdom
FFXVI
Pikmin 4
Baldurs Gate 3
Armored Core 6
Starfield
Forza
Spiderman 2
Super Mario Wonder

And inbetween there's promising new Assassins Creed game and a lot of other stuff.

Magatsuhi700d ago

Lol speak for yourself. Xbox has had a mediocre line up and the author tries to equate returnal with the halo mediocrity by plastering the two games together. The damage control for xbox is really next level mental gymnastics.

shinoff2183700d ago

The damage control is next gen

CrimsonWing69700d ago

I’ve had the pleasure of experiencing the NES up to now and I’ll admit this has been the most baffling of generations to me.

It’s been pretty underwhelming, but I assume with devs starting to drop cross-gen we’ll start getting the “greatness”.

darthv72700d ago

If you been around long as i have... you know the best usually comes at or near the end. That is when the devs have really come into their own and are able to really make the hardware do things nobody thought possible. You can understand this by looking at the games released near the end of a consoles life and the ones at the launch. Its a night and day difference but its the same hardware from beginning to end.

We just dont see that kind of commitment anymore. Devs have gotten complacent and relying on the hardware to do all the work instead of the other way around. when having limitations was seen as a challenge for them to push past. Those were the good old days.

CrimsonWing69700d ago

I just miss the days when we got into a new generation, it really felt like a new generation.

This gen I can’t tell the difference from last-gen since it’s been 95% cross-gen. Nothing feels special or unique about this gen… yet.

Miraak82 700d ago

Up until ps3/ps4 I remember for the most part up on console releases you'd have maybe a few games that you could get and most of them were really primitive until a few years in . Remember going to blockbuster when I got my Genesis/Snes/N64/Ps1/Ps2/Ps3 and you'd have like 2-10 games taking up a whole shelf for like year or 2 on release. People be complaining but then I see trailers to things like FF7Rebirth and Armored Core 6 and I get the feeling of childhood wonder and excitement and it's just the beginning. Now I just look forward to playing better versions of games I already play whenever a new console drops and hope to get some bombass games later down the line. Most of the top games of last gen didn't really start dropping hard till maybe 2018 ... 5 years after ps4 released

blackblades700d ago (Edited 700d ago )

Maybe being around for so long playing videos for decades is the problem its like the old 90-100 year old not being excited for there birthday anymore. Its not much difference you can get with games these day graphic wise. Best thing we can get in the next couple of gens is increased details, fadility that more on screen, animation, AI etc.. Besides that Cl
Closes ive seen so far was rachet n clank with the rifts. Maybe devs are playing it safe who knows.

shinoff2183700d ago (Edited 700d ago )

Absolutely agree Darth. Doesn't happen often I agree but here it is.

Just look. Last of us on ps3 as an example. If I'm also not mistaken u feel cross Gen stuff usually lasted a year and a half 2 years so to me it doesn't really seem off.

Soldierone699d ago

While performance gets better, there were fun games at the beginning of both previous generations. PS4 had Infamous, Killzone, Flower, Battlefield 4. PS3 had Blast Factor, Ultimate Alliance, Resistance, and once the dry spell ended it was hit after hit.

PS5 has basically Returnal, FF16, and Ratchet and Clank. Everything else basically has been a cross gen title.

***I just miss the days when we got into a new generation, it really felt like a new generation. ***

I feel ya, but this is kind of how it goes now. As technology advances the differences become harder and harder to see and less and less innovation happens. Furthermore, as the industry grew so did the typical handling of it similar to other entertainment industries. Games are doled out strategically, designed to appeal to wider audiences, limited in scope so as to not scare off the more casual market, and written to appeal to a wider market.

LeeFender700d ago (Edited 700d ago )

AI will help gaming development astronomically in terms of time. We are just in early stages right now. Mark my words.

shinoff2183700d ago

I think covid has played more into it then people think. They saying games take 4 to 6 years now. Well covid fucked up a couple of those years a little depending where the devs are from.

isarai699d ago

Exactly, I've been around about the same, been gaming since 95, and this is the ONLY generation where 3 yrs later I still feel like I'm waiting for a "next gen experience" we usually get shortly after the 1yr-1.5yr Mark. This has been the most anticlimactic console launch I've ever experienced

It Shouldn't Take Expedition 33's Success to Remind Square Enix That Turn-Based Still Sells

True, but if it does get it through their thick skulls, then that works.

Although, the Dragon Quest 1 + 2 HD remakes will be turn-based and (the worst kept secret) Final Fantasy IX remake should be turn-based I would imagine. Let's see if any newer games go turn-based too.

thorstein7h ago(Edited 7h ago)

DQIII HD Remake was turned based and very successful. Then there was a really obscure turn based game came Balder's Gate 3. I heard it might have done well.

Profchaos4h ago

I wouldn't be shocked if they switched ff to the vii remake combat system

PapaBop17m ago

It won't get through to them though, despite E33's success, they still won't risk going fully turn based for their big budget projects simply because they are still in the mindset that it needs to be action combat to appeal to the mainstream audience. I hope I'm wrong but don't underestimate just how stubborn Japanese execs can be

DivineHand12510h ago

While it is true that Sqaure Enix has moved away from turn based games compared to how they were in the past, there is a good reason for it.

Older gamers will know this but during the ps2 era, we were flooded with turned based games from Japanese studios and this created a form of fatigue back then going into the next generation.

When Square released FF13, they received heavy criticism for making the game turned based like every other FF game and not doing enough to innovate. This is why they made FF15, FF7 Remake and FF16 have real time combat. It gave the series a fresh spin and has brought in new fans to the series.

I personally would be happy with either turned based FF or the real-time combat version we see today.

Shane Kim9h ago

Remake and Rebirth have "turn based" if you set it in the settings.

Lexreborn27h ago

Dang wish I saw your post before I made mine because we definitely feel the same way lol

Profchaos4h ago(Edited 4h ago)

Yeah hit the nail on the head but its like ww2 games we get hundreds of them then a decade of nothing and people start missing them i think we're going to start seeing them return

Claire, dragon quest even yakuza have seen turn based return

andy8510h ago

Only need to look at their own game DQ 11 approaching 10 million to show there's a market. And that's not as big of a name as FF

Tacoboto9h ago

Another article about Expedition 33 and Square Enix and turn-based games? This is starting to sound like propaganda.

The game didn't sell because it's a turn-based game; it sold and is enjoyed because it's a really freaking good game that released completed at a good price without gamer drama attached to it. No Mtx, no wait-until-it's-patched, minimal bloat, a self-contained story, no multiplatform BS. Just a solid original game that absolutely nails what it intended to do.

Redemption-649h ago

I was just about to say the same thing.

anast8h ago

This comment should have a 100 upvotes, at least.

CrimsonWing699h ago

Maybe try actually listening to the fans who have supported the series for decades. This habit of ignoring your core audience just to chase people who were never interested in Final Fantasy in the first place makes no sense. And when that approach fails, doubling down on it is beyond baffling.

The battle system has never been the main reason non-FF or non-JRPG players stayed away. Gutting the series’ identity to chase a broader market doesn’t attract new players. It just alienates the loyal ones.

Keep going down this road and we’ll end up with Final Fantasy Fortnite abomination or a F2P Battle Royale game.. Oh wait…
