It's possible... never say never... that the PS3 will eventually catchup to the xbox 360 installbase... but let's not forget that the xbox 360 is selling too...

The current installbase lead of the xbox 360 over the PS3(europe only) is 2,056,958

That means if we assume that means that it would take 57 Weeks for the PS3 to catchup by selling nearly 2:1 against the xbox 360.

Of course the asumption is that Microsoft will not drop the price of the xbox 360 during that time and that no game on the xbox 360 will move any consoles...

Yes... I'm not going to mention global sells.. Halo 3 created at least a six-ten month gap between the the PS3 install base.

But who knows... maybe people will forget about the games.. and that the PS3 is still not mainstream price at $400...

Globally... if every goes perfect for Sony and everything goes wrong for Microsoft... it would take at least 2 Years for the PS3 to catch up. I'm not exagerating when I say that.. it took the wii practically 1 year catching up selling more consoles than the xbox 360 at a rate of 10:1 more than the xbox 360 in many regions.

Hmmm as much as I want to beleive this it's VGchartz so I'll wait for better numbers.

...if it had not been for competition we would not have seen Sony react so soon in the PS3's lifecycle. So, if nothing else SOny fanboys have the 360 and Wii to thank for Sony's new 40 GB SKU and recent price drop.

I have to say I'm so sick of the constant lists of games fanboys use to strike fear into the opposing camp. Any true gamer will be looking at the lists and going wow, look at all the games I get to play!

I'm an Xbox 360 owner/FanBoy, and Microsoft deserves to be outsold. Sure, Bioshock and Halo 3 are great games, but what do the games matter if you have a piece of junk console. Xbox 360's are showing 3 red light failure rates of up to 33% on some polls. This is rediculous. Microsoft needs to fix their console and fast.

The decision to get rid of BC and reduce price by 200 is not a bad idea after all.

I see the ps3 out selling the 360 here on out in those states.. Most likely side by side with the wii until the big hitters come into play for the ps3.. All 3 systems will do well in the states but sony will own europe and japan here on out.. Soon they will take over the us.. Its just a matter of time young grasshoppers..

We're on the heels of it now, and I wouldn't be surprised if at least a few people were stocking up on electronics in preparation for possible droughts.

It's interesting though. Halo 3 has already hit last month, so I think it's fair to say that the consoles have a pretty equal line-up. Maybe whichever console sells the most(and game of course) will tell us what genre is the most popular this year.

When I first came here I said that it was only a matter of time and a price drop before Sony's base started to mobilize. It's already happening and there alot of people who are waiting for that price drop. It's great news but wait for more detailed figures before you guys get overly excited.

I just bought my ps3 2 days ago with ninja gaiden and Oblivion. Im getting my HD today, currently playing on a 15'' sharp TV ;P. Anyway I couldnt be more than happy with it. Loyal Sony costumer and fan since 1995.

Kids, let's not get too excited yet. We should expect PS3 sales to jump because if nothing happened, that would have been a really bad sign for Sony. What I want to know is how much of the current sales are for the 40 gb or the 60 gb model. If it's mostly the 40 gb model, that would be really good news for Sony because that's the model that will be around from now on and its popularity would strongly indicate the PS3 will maintain its high sales momentum. However, if it's mostly the 60 gb model, then it's not so great because this may just be a temporary surge as people rush to buy the remaining 60 gb models with backcompat before they are sold out. Sales may drop again after these are all gone. Remember all the premature celebrations the last time the PS3 outsold the 360, which also followed a price cut - on the 20 gb model. Try not to make the same mistake this time. Only time will tell for sure.

I'm not directly commenting on this weeks figures, so don't assume this is a fanboy-ish rant.

But for the people complaining about the inaccuracy of VGChartz numbers, stop. It uses plenty of resources to gets its sales figures, and often compares/corrects according to professional tracking services.

On topic, great for PS3. Hopefully they can sustain these sales until the PES'08 bundle, which should move a lot of consoles.

I'm not trying to be an ass here, it's just that the video games industry seems a little bit better when Sony is on top - kind of like when Clinton was in office compared to Bush (relatively speaking). I know they've got a ways to go, but this is certainly a BIG step in the right direction. Congrats. =]

These numbers just aren't reliable enough. I mean where does this site get their numbers from? Why doesn't the likes of IGN or another site post these numbers each week if it's so easy and the sources are available?

That said, I think the PS3 will do very well with the PC.

Two of my mates have just purchased a PS3 (one sold his 360 for it). And the reason..... Two words..... Pro Evo!! Its massively popular in europe and due out next week, I know it coming to the 360 too but based on last years effort I think people have lost confidence in the 360 version.

Have to say for that latest week: congrats to Sony, it seems last week you got a sales peak. Although selling 30k more then the 360 in Europe for one week won't bring you victory.

The 360 outsold the PS3 by a margin of 20k. The 360 is outselling the PS3 in USA with 130k compared to the PS3 30k last weeks.

May I also remind you all the 360 outsold the PS3 world wide the first 6 months, July one month the PS3 peaked (because of price drop) after that the 360 outsold the PS3 again world wide up to today. That means out of 9 whole months, the 360 got 8 outselling the PS3.

Yes price drops draw attention, but don't forget that MS will take a move now Sony dropped their price on the latest model. Because yes, the PS3 jumped in sales, but that was nescessary also, the week before in UK

Its temp boost. More sony lemmings will buy it without quality games, then sales will taper off. After few months sony will again drop its price to boost up sales. SO by mid 2008 ps3 shud be around 200$ and by end of 2008 it will be $100. That will be the time to pick it up.

Still, by my maths, that means that just taking these sales into mind (not including the fact that the 360 and Wii have teared the PS3 apart in sales in the EU practically every year to this date), the PS3 is set to be the top selling console in a region in about 654 weeks, and for the most annoying person on this site (nasim), incase you cant do the simple math of converting that into years, thats about 12.5 years. Why do people automatically think the Ps3 should win the console war, they constantly go on about 2008 being their year like it’s a divine right, that these so called 90 million plus PS2 owners are going buy a PS3 when the price becomes affordable. They keep throwing games around like MGS, KZ2, GT5,FF. I’m sorry looking at sales figures on Wiki for the last MGS Snake eater (3.7 million) and FF (3.68 million) what were the other 80 million owners buying (probably existing owners upgrading to a slimline Ps2) . Also going off the first one KZ2 ain’t going to be no classic, though I will concede CT5 Sells well (11 Million) and is a great game.

But considering most games in 2008 will be multi-format and that X360 also has some great upcoming exclusive like NG2, Alan Wake, Banjo, Halo wars, lost odyssey, Too Human, PDZ2, Fable 2, Gears 2??, and at least 2 years back catalogue, history has taught us that people go where the most number of games are. (Also which system is the easiest to mod?)

This is great news for sony they have needed something like this for a while now. It also shows how badly they need to bring the price cut over here cause although they outsold the wii and 360 in eu they were behind in total global sales for that week. Now we all know that a peak happens when the price drops can they keep it going, lets hope so. It be interesting to see what ms reply is to this will they drop the price in the eu or hope that there bundles will get them through. Probably if sony keeps this pace I see a price drop if not then I see them going with bundles. This is a sales PEAK because it only covered, essentially, 4 days of the last week when the price dropped. Lets wait and see if this trend continues but it will need to continue from now on, week by week, month by month.

We will have to wait and see. Sales spikes are common when the price drops. I hope MS keeps making game consoles. That way Sony can establish its dominance on MS's leg for years to come.

There's no need to celebrate. I own both and yes, I want the 360 to sell a lot of units. At this point i like my 360 better. The industry needs competition. If the 360 falls of the face of the Earth then Sony has a monopoly. There's no reason to be against one system or the other. It's just a stupid war that goes on in here and other gaming sites. I have no idea why I want MS to win but when I stop and think, it's pretty dumb for any one console to "win". Anyway, just my thoughts.

The PS3 will still need a lot of help to overcome the critics but I find it insulting, being a 360 fanboy, that the 360 has only sold 3.5 million systems, what the hell MS? Maybe each system should take a look at themselves and start thinking about the Next NEXT-GEN console and start developing a possible slimmer, cooler running system to boost sales, AKA Slim PS2 boomed sales for PS2.

Im not surprised PS3 is outselling xbox 360. And i bet by the end of 2008 at the latest PS3 will be the console market leader again. PS3 holds a lot of exclusive games now that i want to get. ( HAZE, FF, KILLZONE 2, Uncharted, MGS4 etc ) And things like PlayStation Home are going to be really cool. Add this with the fact that i found Halo 3 REALLY dissappointing ( Everyone knows its a port from xbox 1 ) and it's reasons like this why i choose PS3 over 360 for the win.

Look at me I am a 360 fan, I have all these amazing ground breaking High Definition games which don't actually run in true high definition, unfortunately my games got delayed cause the devs couldn't fit on a superior DVD-9 format.

The reason I'm not playing my amazing HD games is because the other day my xbox crashed and now it wont work and it's been sent away to microsoft so instead I'm sat here making myself look like a retard by defending my console thats just broke and eaten my disk :(

Bunk article, PS3 has no games. Every gamer magazine and reviewer will all tell you the same. PS3 is at the bottom, Wii is at the top guys, 360 is in 2nd. Just a fact people, so stop having yourself on and face the facts. Any true gamer can see that the PS3 pretty much sux, PS2 on the other hand was way more of a success. Im no fanboy, just stating the facts. Do some research and see for yourself, i have systems dating back to atari and colecovision. Take it from me, PS3 has a very long way to go if they wanna compete with the real game systems. PS3 is not much of a game system to begin with, more of a movie player to me. So if you want games people, you go with a 360, go with a Wii for the price, the entertainment and virtual console. No reason to break for a PS3, you can get the same games and more on a 360 with a better frame rate and best of all for a much better price! Do the math.

You say you are no fanboy but you're not fooling anyone. Buying an xbox 360 didn't stop me buying a PS3 and within your post you advise people to do they're own research and see for themselves. I hope they take your advice as you may want to note that as far as 'games' go PS3 has more game development than Microsoft AND Nintendo combined.

Also where you said 'No reason to break for a PS3' well i can think of more reasons to own a PS3 over a 360. Here are a few :-

- True HD using Blu Ray format( leading rival of HD-DVD )
- PS3 has more game development than Microsoft and Nintendo combined
- PS3 is the most powerful console on the market using CELL processor and RSX Graphics.
- PS3 has more exclusive games this year than xbox 360 and it looks to continue through 2008 with exclusives games like Metal Gear Solid 4, KILLZONE 2, Final Fantasy, etc

Well good for Sony, hopefully they will release the 80GB PS3 in UK soon, I want BC as well you know. I don't think Japan will buy Killzone 2 all of a sudden because of Sony, its an FPS remember, even Halo 3 a big franchise only sold there for a week or two, although Gears of War did do great there.

This is not the 360, PC or Wii's doom, this is either a peak in sales or a steady flow of sales.

Besides Fall of man and Warhawk (if you have internet) THERE ARE NO GAMES and the ones people keep talking about are not out and release dates for them keep getting pushed back. Say what you want about the 360 however if the system and games did suck MS would never have lived thru the whole RROD thing. Also the whole argument of one beating the other in a territory. The statement of the PS3 beating the 360 in Japan is true. It beats it in sales as well as overall units sold. Europe is not true. The PS3 beat the 360 in sales but NOT in overall units sold (not yet). The 360 still holds a 2 million unit lead over the PS3.

The lead wont last for long but truth be told the PS3 is NOT beating the 360 in Europe.

I think this competition is good in end it gives the consumer a lot of great things such as better games, accessories, networks, etc.
I love competition the PS3 is going to be a victor soon enough at this rate I almost think it will be a tie between all three consoles.
Gaming is a great hobby gotta admit that.
Besides there was one time in 1985 when they had the video game crash that gaming would seize to exist and that was when the Super Nintendo came out and that saved gaming.
So competition is good and it's keeping the hobby of gaming alive today.
Personally I think every console has it's good and bad sides and that no one console can ever be flawless in every area possible if that were true there would be nothing to improve on and look forward to.
I'm a Sony Droid and proud to be one but I'm still considering buying a Xbox 360 in the future mostly for Project Offset, Halo 3, Alan Wake, etc.
Gaming will never die let that be known to the world forever.

Hey guys I just read the review for Gameinformer and they gave Mass Effect 9.75 rating. Although I'll probably buy this game when it comes to the PC (eventually), the review has me confused. The review gives the game props for the story, in fact 85% of the review talks about just the story line. They also like the graphics in the game a lot too. But it stops there; they have negative feedback on the rest of the game. I'll give you some examples.

"One of the greatest science fiction stories ever told, and a new benchmark for video game storytelling"

"Now, you've probably noticed I haven't talked about gameplay"

"Most of the skirmishes, which begin and end in the blink of an eye, run into balancing issues, problematic SI, and a difficulty in comprehending what is traspiring"

"Out of the corner of you eye, you may see one of your teammates blindly firing at a wall two feet in front of him. Or perhaps a foe, who you didn’t even know existed, drains your shields from a location off your radar."

"The deep character and weapon customization can create some lethal and amusing blends, but after a few hours, you'll have seen it all."

"It doesn't live up to the large stage the story sets or the standards you've come to expect from action games and RPGs."

I'll buy it cause storyline and graphics is what I like, but I can not believe they scored it a 9.75 on just those factors. I am not making this up; if you don't believe me pick up a copy of Gameinformer #175.

Good sales for the PS3, they sure do like their Sony over there. Although I think it will dip below the Wii next week.

Look everyone. We've been through this before. Sony makes a price drop, Sony fans come running for a week or two, and then they disappear. We've been here before. Am I the only one that sees that the difference is more than 300,000 (in XBOX360's favor) in the US alone? Do you know how long it would take for the PS3 to catch the XBOX360 at that pace? They're more than 7 million consoles behind! And you're all celebrating a margin of 30,000 units? Now THAT'S grasping for any positive information that you can get your hands on. I log onto this site daily just to get the latest information in gaming. But it's getting frustrating. Where's the honesty? Where's the truthfulness? Be honest for once in this "battle" Sony Fans, this is VERY disappointing in the grand scheme of things. Right?

In fact, sells over the Wii is an exception, but sell over the X360 isn't new to PS3...

People just don't get it, PS3 has sold well in Europe since March, maybe not over the Wii, not enough to make it first, but PS3 is all right in Europe and Japan, most time it's outselling X360...

The big deal for PS3 is to engage in America, when it's done, when Sony can atract those PS2 owners, than it'll be one hell of a part. America is about 65% of X360 market, if Sony can made it there, then X360 will take serious damage, just like X360 can do with PS3 if it start to sells good in Japan.

and all the 60 gig systems are gone. Sales will go back to the way they are now.

I love how they leave out the American sales which has the xbox 360 ahead of the PS3 by a much larger margin, and is in 1st place in terms of hardware sales.

ps3 a console? NOT, and WRONG

This is an example of the inherit greed people have. They want other rpgs to do what another game does, even if it doesnt make sense. Mass Effect had a different dialogue structure, to to mention that shepard is a voiced protagonist. Tav is not. Furthermore, we have a close to home example of why this is not so great idea. Dragon age attempted to copy mass effect when it came to dialogue structure, with slight variation. Im pretty sure most dragon age fans preferred Origins approach.

They dont beed to concern themselves too much with Larian. BioWare would be better off mastering themselves.
