The Baldur's gate series was amazing!

GWAVE5264d ago

Yup, Baldur's Gate (on PC, not console) is still one of the best RPG storylines out there, although Planescape Torment has a better story and better characters overall, IMO.

JoySticksFTW5263d ago

Yeah PC Baldur's Gate series is insane

Especially with mods and conversions like Baldur's Gate Trilogy for example, which allows BG1 to be played with BGII's upgraded graphics and control / gameplay improvements -- and combines BG1 with BGII as one epic playthrough.

If you haven't tried BG1 & 2, try picking it up cheap from ebay or gog.com (even better). Then do yourself a favor and download the free "Big World Project".

BWP will convert BG1 into BGII for you easy, as well as add any interesting mods that you check off on the list. Then you just sit back and let BWP do all of the long technical work for you.

BG1 is even better with new classes to choose from, companion personality enhancement, new quests and characters...

I'm primarily a console gamer, but there are reasons why PC gamers shy away from console versions of games. Added mods are one reason. While we're playing vanilla versions of games, PC gamers are usually playing the same games on a whole new level.

I've been hoping for a game like Baldur's Gate (for consoles) this entire gen. Baldur's Gate and Champions of Norath were by far my favorite games last gen. They're what got me into loving the RPG genre.

I really wish theyd make a game like those for this gen. The co-op was a blast. I really miss those games.

candystop5263d ago (Edited 5263d ago )

Yeah Baldurs Gate 1 was epic but part 2 felt kind of generic to me. For me the best rpg ever was Phantasy Star 1.

visualb5263d ago

agree'd

still my fav bioware franchise, even though I never actually finished it =P (got close) it was just so awesome

Letros5264d ago

They don't make RPGs this good anymore, although Witcher 2 may just be the right stuff.

yesah5263d ago

they do my freind, Oblivion has reighned down and allowd goodness to spread throughout the land!

Focker4205263d ago

Baldur's Gate > Oblivion

Simon_Brezhnev5263d ago

Hell I'll be bold and say the Witcher 2 will be the greatest RPG this generation.

Imalwaysright5263d ago

I dont know. Surpassing Demons Souls wont be easy.

visualb5263d ago

witcher 2 seems closes although I miss this type of party-like system which tbh DA:O didn't pull off so well =(

CrzyFooL5263d ago

Dragon Age was the closest game to Baldur's Gate. Sadly, Dragon Age II is deviating from that formula. I don't know why . . .

Malebaria5263d ago (Edited 5263d ago )

Like GWAVE said,I do find Planescape Torment's story and characters, especially their interactions with each other to be leaps better than Baldur's Gate 2. Torment's script is just out of this world, even to this day.
Still, there's no denying BG 2 ranks up in the top five best RPGs ever.
I have high hopes for The Witcher 2 as well Letros,if the first is anything to go by,they have every chance to deliver an outstanding game.

The getaway
Smugglers run
Dead to rights
Worlds scariest police chases
Sure I’m missing a few.

Mannn… worlds scaries police chases… that took me back lol

Knushwood Butt110d ago

Ape Escape.
Fun game but, wow, you need a college degree to understand the controls.
A remaster would also save you from having to constantly fight the camera.
Keep the music though. Those drum and bass tracks fit really well and haven't aged. Made me think that more games could work well with drum and bass tracks, but unfortunately it's a somewhat niche genre now.

Max Payne Series
Infamous 1 & 2
NBA Street Vol 2

YourMommySpoils109d ago

They are making the first one, as we speak.

jznrpg110d ago (Edited 110d ago )

One of the few Xbox games I own. I have 3 copies of it because of the many discs it has, for just in case reasons

jznrpg110d ago (Edited 110d ago )

Xenogears, Xenosaga trilogy, Vagrant Story, Drakengards, Parasite Eve and many more but I’ll start with those

Play the original Baldur's Gate games right now on Game Pass before Baldur's Gate 3

To make up for the Baldur's Gate 3 release window delay on Xbox, fans of the RPG franchise can expect Baldur's Gate 1 and Baldur's Gate 2 to drop on Game Pass.

Looks like more quality RPGs are coming our way via Gamepass! Amazing News!

franwex668d ago

At this point it’s RPG Pass. I’m not complaining, I’ll sub again to try Starfield. Maybe even sooner than that if I beat FF16 in the next few weeks.

GhostScholar668d ago

Not even a quarter of games on game pass are rpgs. This is one of the reason Xbox has been trying to establish a better relationship with the Japanese devs and fans.

A few tips for BG1&2..
#1: Press the little red diamond thing. That's quick loot and will show you whatever is on the ground, including the contents of corpses. Saves a million clicks and is the difference between an unbearable looting experience and a somewhat tolerable one.
#2: Go into the menus and enable some autopause settings. Particularly for when you spot an enemy or a trap. Probably also on character death.
#3: Crowd control is more OP in these games than in any other RPG I've ever played in my life. Fear it. Abuse it.
#4: Be patient. These are not experiences to be rushed and would be better skipped than skimmed.

BrainSyphoned668d ago

At this point lore/recap videos are probably better if you are interested in BG3 but haven't played the originals.

kythlyn668d ago

I spent half of July playing BG1&2. They definitely have old game jank, and as I mentioned above, the crowd control is insanely broken. But if you can stomach the combat and have patience, they are definitely still worth playing. The amount of freedom the player is given is just astonishing, even with the standards of today (pretty impressive considering over 20 years have passed). Baldur's Gate II in particular reminded me why it's often considered the best CRPG ever made.
