Avowed: The Final Preview - IGN

Every time we've gotten to play Avowed, we come away even more impressed. That happened again this time, as we took sadistic delight in being as evil as we could possibly be in this first-person fantasy RPG.

DivineHand125180d ago

I forgot about this game after it was revealed to be 30 fps. That revelation killed all the hype and interest I had in this game.

SoloZelot90180d ago

Play it on PC if you can. 30fps is common place in consoles. It will always be.

LucasRuinedChildhood180d ago

It's actually not commonplace anymore. Can't think of a game this gen that I played at 30fps. Unless you're talking about the Switch.

99% of games have 60fps modes these days on consoles. Although it will become slightly more common for a while due to UE5.

But I also won't be surprised if a 60fps mode is added later in Avowed.

JEECE180d ago (Edited 180d ago )

That's the problem. We need to get past the idea of 30 fps as the acceptable baseline. I won't blame Obsidian or any specific dev for using it because there is this unfortunate expectation that it's okay to push a game as far as you can while still being able to maintain 30 fps. That was fine for the early HD era, but just like we have come to expect a baseline resolution and somewhat consistent control schemes, I think it is reasonable to start expecting 60 fps as a baseline.

andy85180d ago

4 years into next gen and I've not played a single game that's only 30 on PS5. I played Plague Tale Requiem at 40 but even that ended up getting a 60 fps mode

Profchaos179d ago

It's funny but console 30 fps limitations mainly started around the ps360 era ps2 era had so many 60 games people seem to have forgotten this

GotGame818179d ago

Not true! Both PS5 and Series X both have a ton of games that run at both 60fps and 120fps!

SoloZelot90179d ago

Wow. I must be imagining these comments. Hold on to your seats guys. Modern games will not run too well without performance modes.

Games do have more options in terms of performance but the quality mode is always 30fps...almost always. Unless we're talking about games that run on last gen hardware.

Man, I couldn't see limiting myself to a game just because it's not 60fps.

"I would go see Shakespeare's latest, but the stage is not at the height I like."

JEECE180d ago

Would you play a game at 15fps? Or would you limit yourself in that situation?

To deal with your analogy, what if you are on the ground and the stage is 100 feet above you? Turns out if the stage is at such a height that you can't properly see the play, it doesn't matter how good King Lear is.

Christopher180d ago (Edited 180d ago )

***Would you play a game at 15fps? Or would you limit yourself in that situation? ***

That would be a broken game. We're not talking about a broken game. What silly nonsense are you people pulling to try and win an argument? 30fps has been fine since the 80s and it still is now. You can play the game, as intended, at that. Is 60fps better? Sure. But 30fps is not broken.

So, don't come at me with "what if the game was broken" idiocy.

Edit: And as your ridiculous analogy, then you're not viewing the play at all. That's not a good analogy. 30fps isn't a stage 100 foot in the air. Ridiculous.

JEECE180d ago

Achievement Unlocked: Goalposts Moved!

Earlier framerate was just a preference, and a silly one at that. Now you admit that it affects gameplay BUT it's only a real problem if it doesn't meet your preferred threshold. But if someone else has a different threshold, that is them just being silly and limiting themselves.

On the analogy, I used an extreme example to prove a point. Some people see 30 fps as choppy and affecting gameplay just like you see 15 fps as choppy and affecting gameplay. From their perspective, if it is ruining the gameplay, they might as well not be "seeing the play."

Christopher180d ago (Edited 180d ago )

***Achievement Unlocked: Goalposts Moved! ***

You don't realize but you literally did that.

I said "Man, I couldn't see limiting myself to a game just because it's not 60fps."

I didn't say "Man, I couldn't see limiting myself to a game just because it's broken."

***Earlier framerate was just a preference, and a silly one at that. Now you admit that it affects gameplay BUT it's only a real problem if it doesn't meet your preferred threshold.***

Literally not what I said at all. And no one called 30fps a preference.

***On the analogy, I used an extreme example to prove a point.***

That you could make a bad argument? Good point. I gotcha.

JEECE180d ago

Come on. Don't pretend you don't understand the concept of implying something. You said: "Man, I couldn't see limiting myself to a game just because it's not 60fps."

The obvious implication you are making in the context is that it's just a preference-and one you can't fathom-to want to play a game at 60fps instead of 30fps. But to some people, 30fps is not fine, just like 15fps isn't fine to you.

anast180d ago

"I would go see Shakespeare's latest, but the stage is not at the height I like."

Good stuff here

Jin_Sakai180d ago

“Man, I couldn't see limiting myself to a game just because it's not 60fps.“

30fps is a slideshow on an OLED.

P_Bomb180d ago (Edited 180d ago )

Shakespeare? Or just another bloated AAA that I’ll GamePass for a minute, before moving back to my 60fps backlog. We shall see…

8bitAssassin179d ago

Facts. 30 is great as long as I can play the game and it performs wonderful. Especially if it's single player. Hell you can't even buy Vanillaware games on p.c. Let alone have the option for better framerates.

CrimsonWing69179d ago (Edited 179d ago )

Yea, I always play games on fidelity, so I couldn’t give 2 sh*ts that this game runs at 30 fps. I also annually run through Bloodborne, which is 30 fps, sometimes lower, and it’s still to this very day one of my favorite games. So, people that won’t play a game just because it’s 30 fps, are crazy to me.

That being said, I don’t like the look of this game, and that’s kind of giving me a hang up from vesting interest in it.

Hell man... I remember when there were 15fps games. Myst is all point and click but it sure looked good (for the time). This looks good too and fps dont really bother me. It may end up being 60...

Lightning77180d ago

The team said 30 frames isn't the final frames but they're making a 60 fps mode right now hopefully they'll make it by Launch granted they have 3 extra months of time.

maniacmayhem180d ago

You've been playing 30fps games your whole life and I would bet some of your favorites of all time are 30fps.

Stop with the nonsense.

lukasmain179d ago

Stick to your guns, these devs will eventually make a 60fps just like what happened with Starfield. It's a joke that it launches in 30fps and there is no excuse for it. I don't care what anyone says, it's bullshit

This is one of those games where I put trust in the team and the game looks fun and they're known for story and fun. Haven't decided on PC or Series X. Will wait for DF review on that. Might have to plug my Series X back in.

Side note: Why are devs so pushy on NPCs helping us with quests? Absolutely needs to become a standard to turn that off completely, IMHO.

Obscure_Observer180d ago

Hype INTENSIFIES!!!

February is so packed with great games and RPGs that it´s gonna be impossible to keep up with all!

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2
Assassin's Creed Shadows
Avowed
Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii
Monster Hunter Wilds

Christopher180d ago

I've finally got some time with AC Mirage after a deep sale and if Shadows is like that? I'm probably going to skip it. I really hope they don't try to over gamify stealth fail mechanics and have you waste time collecting medallions and hunting down posters. Just wasn't fun. Let alone those missions where they respawned enemies. Note to future AC Mirage gamers, don't use abilities that delete bodies. They respawn.

anast180d ago (Edited 180d ago )

The animation looks rough in parts, but it might be the new Skyrim everyone has been wanting. I might check it out after the multiplatform release.

TheNamelessOne180d ago

Definitely my most anticipated at the moment, now that STALKER 2 is out. Love the Pillars universe and have been a fan of almost everything Obsidian has put out over the years. The game looks better and better every time they show it.

At one point, Avowed would have taught us to use magic with an explosive Elder Scrolls reference

The Morrowind gag is, blessedly, still in the game in a different form.
