That's...$150 more than I expected 🙄

I'll wait until there's more compelling games that I can't play on my Index.

darthv72940d ago

Im still planning to get one... just not at launch. It will have to wait until summer.

Army_of_Darkness940d ago

$750 Canadian dollars!! Gawdamn! Looks like I'll have to wait a couple years before buying it because I can't justify spending that much at the moment.

940d ago
darthv72940d ago

@Jimmy... DoA.... nah. Just aimed at the hardcore with money to burn. It will come down in price but prob not until later in the year (holidays)

VenomUK940d ago

Woah. Because of world circumstances I knew prices would be up and thought for sure it would be £499 in the UK but £529.99 is over that psychological half a grand mark.

Now what I want to see from Sony to make it a day one purchase is to know that the whole platform has had an upgrade from PSVR1 VR experiences and has some triple A games, or maybe even just one like Half-Life Alyx

seanpitt23940d ago

That’s my water bill for a year.. damn!

RauLeCreuset940d ago

Whether it's DOA is up to Sony and how they manage their expectations. It would make sense to target enthusiasts until the price comes down and more PS5s are sold, making PSVR2 more accessible. The question is if they planned accordingly and are willing to play the long game. I hope they don't have unrealistic expectations that they'll be raking in profits until such time.

Babadook7940d ago (Edited 940d ago )

Not a bad price. Getting it day one assuming good games are there. How much was the psvr at launch? (The one with two move controllers)

Edit. $499.99.

Outside_ofthe_Box940d ago (Edited 940d ago )

This priced me out from getting one. This is DOA in regards to VR going "mainstream". I guess PSVR 4 or 5 to be when VR is adopted by the masses. I expect PSVR 3 to be expensive as well.

porkChop940d ago

Yikes, $549 is really steep. That's $749 for Canadians. I think Sony just priced out a lot of people that would otherwise have been interested. At $399 it's a relatively easy sell, but $549 is more than the PS5 itself. That's crazy.

Zeref940d ago (Edited 940d ago )

They can’t sell 2 products at a loss, I think their hands are tied here.

I hope it will at least support pc because 11 titles is not worth it at all

dumahim940d ago

The first PSVR sold for $400 without controllers. This is a much better headset and comes with controllers.
Sure a lower price would be nice, but shouldn't be surprising considering what you get and the way everything is going these days.

SullysCigar940d ago

Zeref 11 titles have been announced today, but there are loads more we already know of.

People are so quick to gasp, because it's a lot of money, they're not factoring in you get arguably the best mainstream headset out there PLUS 2 cutting edge controllers for that price.

It's definitely not cheap and it's a tall order in the current climate for many, but I'm not sure I'd question the value-tech ratio here.

I got my preorder email from Sony and hope to snag one on day one. I'll let you know if I think it was worth it!

Abear21940d ago

Agreed especially when competition is the same price or cheaper and has no wires and cheaper software

babadivad940d ago

The PS5 sells at a profit. Sony said so themselves.

Lightning77940d ago (Edited 940d ago )

If anyone thought it was gonna be 400$ were kidding themselves. I predicted 500 but I was 50$ off it seems. If the PS5 is more costly then their VR will be pricey also.

blackblades940d ago

Well they gotta profit and not lose money

thorstein940d ago

It's $50 dollars more than the launch PSVR that came with controllers and a camera.

porkChop940d ago

@thorstein

Yeah, and the PSVR didn't sell all that well. The last sales update from Sony was just 5 million units, that's only like 4% of the PS4 userbase. The Quest 2 has sold more than 3 times that in only 2 years. The Quest 2 will be PSVR 2's biggest competitor and it's a standalone wireless headset. The high price plus the need for a PS5 will keep the PSVR 2 from seeing those kinds of numbers. Sony has to keep the price of add-ons down if they want any kind of meaningful adoption.

Lifexline940d ago

Yeah it’s practically dead on arrival.

This is the only worth this price if it works natively on pc and ps5 .

babadivad940d ago

If it works native on PC, that's a bit of redemption for it.

SierraGuy940d ago

Really? The top of the line quest is $1500.

Name Last Name940d ago

damn! This feels like PS3 coming out with their “599 US Dollars”

CR7JUVE1897940d ago

But at least the PS3 had a fairly strong launch lineup and was introducing a mainstay format in Blu-Ray. That price point was somewhat acceptable, especially considering that it was backwards compatible with PS1 and PS2 titles.

But this? For this much?

JackBNimble940d ago

Ps3 was BC at launch. Having to keep psvr around to play older games isn't going to help sony sell any units, especially at launch with a limited catalog.

VenomUK940d ago

@Name Last Name said: "damn! This feels like PS3 coming out with their “599 US Dollars”

The thing is $549 in 2022 is cheaper than $599 was 16 years ago in 2006.

S2Killinit940d ago (Edited 940d ago )

It 50 bucks more than PSVR was (am I right?)
And that didnt come with controllers even. (Can someone confirm)

With all the improvements over the original, and the fact that everything os more expensive currently, it doesnt seem out of the ordinary to me. Quite the contrary, its a good deal. Steep, but a good deal nonetheless.

For me , its a day one.

crazyCoconuts940d ago

I think the original PSVR bundle with camera and controllers was $499USD retail if memory serves. So, yeah given inflation not surprised we're looking at $50 more

HICK940d ago

Yep me too, day 1. All these complainers either don't know much about VR and the cost of things (most probably never invested in the first one) or they are just biased

The_Hooligan940d ago

Same. $399.99 would have been the sweet spot for me. Even at $449.99 I would have been ok but $549.99 is not gonna do it for me. The only way to attract people at that price point would be if they start offering 1 PS VR2 game per month as part of PS plus essential. Also if Sony somehow starts adding all PS VR1 games on the extra/premium tier which we can stream (download would be ideal but no backwards compatibility), that would also entice potential buyers.

S2Killinit939d ago (Edited 939d ago )

The original was $500 with controllers, this is 550 with controllers, way more advance and there is the inflation.

crazyCoconuts940d ago

You bought the Index for $1,000 but you expect this to be $399. Ok.....

Doge940d ago

If you must know, I bought for less than $1000 from a friend.

But like I said, I'll wait until there's more compelling games that I can't play on my Index. Although if it worked on a PC, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. The HDR screens alone is incredibly compelling.

crazyCoconuts940d ago

Then hopefully your friend will buy one lol

jznrpg940d ago

The cost of the controllers people are not factoring in. The old one didn’t come with it . This is a great price for high end VR With high end controllers .

Vits940d ago (Edited 940d ago )

I wouldn't find it that expensive if this was a standalone system or a multi-purpose VR headset. But being limited to a PS5 accessory kind of sours the deal. Still, the tech inside it looks cool.

1Victor940d ago (Edited 940d ago )

😢 Someone call my gaming financial advisor and tell him I’m not going to make it 🪦😭
All jk aside time to stop buying stuff on mobile games and save half the price by then maybe more 🤔

dumahim940d ago

The price doesn't bother me, but I need some games to make it worthwhile.

--Onilink--940d ago

I was always expecting $500, it was a lot more high end tech than the previous one (they are probably selling at a small loss) That said, when you start taking into account games, the price does start piling up

neutralgamer1992940d ago

The original PSVR with controllers was $499 so with inflation this is $549. This inflation is here to stay given the world events so we better get used to it

frostypants940d ago (Edited 940d ago )

Yeah. I get the price...OLED and eye-tracking alone made me fear it would justifiably be quite a bit pricier than the Quest 2. But the current known games list is short and most of them look pretty bleh given the horsepower available. E.G. there is no excuse for the Cities VR graphics to be so bad...they should have been upgraded in a big way.

I still think this will be an amazing VR device, but the software support needs to catch up to its capabilities before I drop my cash on one.

S2Killinit939d ago

I’d rather be there from the beginning. Its not like I will be playing more than one or two games at a time. So all I need is Horizon and something else to keep me busy. Also there will be other non VR games to keep me busy.

But for each their own.

CantThinkOfAUsername940d ago

Complains about price, proceeds to mention his $999 VR headset.

Battlestar23940d ago (Edited 940d ago )

Please let that price be a typo? 599 in europe for the PSVR2 sorry but nope. Sony is silly thinking that selling this at that price. It's should be priced around 349.99 to 399.99 max. Sony say they are for the players|? Yeah right. I'll wait until it goes on sale or even just buy it used.

jonny897940d ago

It has some high-end cool stuff. You cannot get this tech for 399.

Eonjay940d ago

Considering that the only other headset with eye tracking is $1500 this is clearly a deal. This is actually really high end. If it's too high give it a year or so.

cell989940d ago

How much did you pay for your "smart" phone?

Crows90940d ago (Edited 940d ago )

I paid $75. I always go for Motorola.
It's more expensive than the console...that's a bit surprising.

TheColbertinator940d ago

My workplace gave me one so my work and personal cell are both the same right now.

alb1899940d ago

Very different. One you need and the other just a hobby.

agnosticgamer940d ago (Edited 940d ago )

I think VR headset vs a smart phone is a terrible comparison personally. I would use a smart phone a lot more than a VR headset and it wouldn’t even be remotely close. I have oculus Rift 2 haven’t touched it in like 6 months. I’ll wait for a price drop and see how well it actually gets supported… Like AAA titles or shovelware.

Wrex369939d ago

You guys really pull out all the stops to excuse paying more for any reason for your decided platform lol

frostypants940d ago (Edited 940d ago )

The Quest 2 costs $399 and has a significantly crappier screen, comparatively bad FOV, and no eye tracking. Why would you expect this NOT to cost more?

I mean yeah, it's expensive as hell. But you can't have all that stuff AND have the pricepoint of a low-end device.

ZycoFox940d ago (Edited 940d ago )

"Crappier screen" have you even used one? Talking utter crap, but then what do I expect from a console fanboy. OLED is good, but not some magical thing, it mostly just makes blacks better if you already have a good screen to begin with.

Those who got a Quest 2 before price raise got a relative bargain.

cartoonx1940d ago

you do realize that quest is a standalone device that works wirelessly?

Kaze88940d ago

It has very good specs and new features for VR. Even Quest 2 is 399 or 499 and it cannot compete on it's specs, only thing Quest 2 does is that you can play on it self and its wireless. Though Meta store prices are shit and quest native games are not particularly good looking. That is why I stream my PC games on it. They had to rise their prices, fking meta needed rise their prices. Sony did too and it seems that after holidays xbox is doing as well due to losing 100-200 bucks on every console. Then we have Valve index that cost 1000 bucks and here we are complaining 599 being too much for hight tech VR glasses.

sparky77940d ago

At that price in this economy I don't see it doing very well, probably worse that PSVR1.

Since it is not just $550 it's $550 plus the cost of a PS5.

KeeseToast940d ago

550$ plus PS5 is how much the Index costs though. They cheaped out a lot on R&D with PSVR1 by using PS Move for tracking to push that price point which was probably the right move at the time.
PSVR2 seems like a much more polished product that even pushes the technology forward with foveated rendering, so IMO the price for this is justified.
I agree though that the higher price point could slow down adoption which would also suck.

Neonridr940d ago

The Index technically came out 3.5 years ago though.

tbagmonster940d ago

at 399 it still wouldnt be adopted, this thing is doa

KeeseToast940d ago

@Neonridr That is true, but the Index still costs 1079€ for the full kit. Probably because there wasn't much competition until recently

cell989940d ago

Inflation is inevitable. You want early 2000s pricing. Don't know about that chief. Look how much an Iwatch is 🤷🏻‍♂️

ChubbyBlade940d ago

Using a company notorious for price gouging isn’t a good example.

VanHalen940d ago (Edited 940d ago )

No, just would be nice to get back where we were just a few years ago. For instance, Arcade1UPs were about $300, now they are coming in at $1,000. That’s not normal inflation. That’s called liberal lunacy highway robbery!

Babadook7940d ago (Edited 940d ago )

Yea, ‘in this economy’ where you can’t build things fast enough and records are being broke? lol.

MaximusPrime_940d ago (Edited 940d ago )

I expected this to be pricey post-pandemic.

Eonjay940d ago

All things considered it's pretty reasonable given the tech. Ii feel like this is definitely coming to PC As well.

Flawlessmic940d ago

Hmm wonder what it will cost in Australia, looking like the same as a ps5 or more so close to 750-800.

Fat no from me, I'm not that into vr anyway but will give this a look in a few years once it's cheaper and hopefully has quality games on it.

Davros69940d ago

Mate, I just checked and US$550 is AUS$856 right now

warriorcase940d ago

So realistically after 'Australia tax' is added on from importing and just cause it will probably land around $899 mark. Strap in lads

DeputyB940d ago

oouf and I thought us Canadians had it rough. In CAD it's like 750$, but with our taxes itll go close to 875$. yah i'll pass on this until a sale or better games with a must have for me.

Profchaos940d ago

Official price 859 AUD or 959 with horizon

Bathyj940d ago

859 Dollareedoos?
Crikey !!

slayernz940d ago

you gotta feel for us nz'ers then....US $550 = ~$950 NZD at the moment......was gonna get one anyway, just have to hope the mrs doesnt find out how much it is haha!!

Interested to learn of Sonys full body tracking and force feedback suit. Reminds me of ready player one.

As for the mention of Quest 3 and 3S. They're nice but why mention them as 2025 and beyond. We already had the Q3S last year and the superior Q3 earlier.

aaronlif104d ago

What we need is Half Life Alyx. How did Sony drop the ball on that?

ApocalypseShadow4d ago

Sony doesn't own the game. It's Valve's game. Valve made the game to get users to use Steam. Just like they made Steam Boxes or the Steam Deck or the Index to get users onto their PC platform.

What Sony should have done was get Insomniac to make Spider-Man for VR. Or, TLofU. Or some big franchise they own converted to VR. Sony should have been more concerned on how to sell the headset besides GT7. The best games on PSVR aren't even compatible with PS VR 2. Another huge mistake. So, games like Astrobot, Wipeout or Blood and Truth are stuck on PS4.

They made a huge amount of money this Gen and did nothing for VR but sit back and watch indie developers. No effort means no buy. Which is surprising coming from Sony.

ibrake4naps4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

The last of Us would work perfect! Horror, looking around with a flashlight, and guns and bows work really well in VR. Sneaking up and grabbing the infected by the neck and choking them out, or throwing bricks and things to distract them sound good too. Not making one is a missed opportunity.

thesoftware7303d ago

They did make a big franchise VR game.

Horizon VR game launched with the system.

darthv723d ago

Not making VR1 games work with VR2 is probably the biggest missed opportunity.

At least a few 3rd parties released patches for some games.

barom4d ago

That's the whole list? VR is doomed. One of the biggest development is more multiplatform releases, which I don't even think is even true. The other one is standalone headsets? Which has been there since 2018 and went mainstream 5 years ago?
