Bioware Exec Admits ME: Andromeda Was Deeply Flawed, Says It Got Lapped by Genuinely Better Games

Bioware's Mark Darrah admitted that Mass Effect: Andromeda was deeply flawed and said it got lapped by genuinely better games that released in the same time frame, such as Horizon: Zero Dawn, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, NieR: Automata and Nioh.

I thought Andromeda was a *fine* game. Not great, not terrible, just something that fit right into that big basket of okay games.

It's never good to hear about how much it got panned critically but there were still fans that genuinely enjoyed the game.

UltraNova2533d ago (Edited 2533d ago )

There's no point sugar coating for the sake of being nice, the game was a flop through and through simply because it was a sub par entry to an other wise stellar, widldy loved series. People expected a lot more from a new long time coming ME game and what we received was no where near the level of expectation.

UCForce2533d ago

Even I enjoyed the game, but I agree with you. It was the weakest ME game of all time.

Razzer2533d ago

Well, maybe it was because I played the game months after release when it went on sale and my expectations were next to nothing, but I really enjoyed the game and could not understand all the hate.

AspiringProGenji2533d ago (Edited 2533d ago )

Yeah man. I wish people would stop sugar coating the flaws of this game which are unnaceptable. Those damn animations and SJW decisions ruined this game. Why can Uncharted 4 live to its Uncharted name, Zelda, Any game in that year, but not Andromeda? I’ll stick with the trilogy and replay it instead.

getbacktogaming2533d ago

I would buy a proper ME trilogy remaster any day of the weak rather than waste my money on Andromeda

NXFather2533d ago

@UCForce

You think it was weaker than ME1?

The 10th Rider2533d ago

@Razzer

I imagine by the time you played it, it had been patched at least somewhat since launch. Basically the same scenario as Assassin's Creed Unity: eventually it was a decent game, even if it's not stellar, but at launch it was a buggy mess.

Father__Merrin2533d ago

It was the weakest me game, but still a good game. Presentation was top notch as was gameplay it's just the story and how it's priced together made it out to be worse than it was

BiggerBoss2532d ago

@NXFather

It was WITHOUT A DOUBT worse than Mass Effect 1. At least in my opinion.

I loved it. I’m a mass effect guy so yeah. They could’ve fixed a lot with story dlc but when they said no to that but yes to multiplayer support I gave up on the game and bioware. Pulled a Rickstar and forgot the roots of your franchise, SINGLE PLAYER!

Saijahn2533d ago

i did but with no single player dlc in the works it loses it's value. the story was incomplete.

rainslacker2533d ago

I don't think it had any deep flaws. Game.play was solid enough. Story wasn't all that great, but it wasn't terrible either. If there was any flaw, its that the supplemental characters weren't all that interesting, and animations were not really good at times.

BiggerBoss2532d ago

Animations were TERRIBLE at times, you mean.

rainslacker2532d ago

Yeah, I suppose that is a fair assessment.

I did get it after the patches though, so I wasn't there at launch to really experience the major flaws that seem to exist on launch. But I sometimes think those are overblown, and I didn't really pay that much attention to this game when it launched anyhow.

Overall, I enjoyed the game, but I think it had flaws worth noting, just not deep flaws like what's being said here.

Chris_Wray2533d ago

Andromeda was pretty average, yeah. Maybe even bordering on decent. However, it was always marred due to the fact it was "Mass Effect". Not only that, it was hamstrung from the start by being forced into using frostbite and so many other aspects. But it's certainly true that it was vastly outclassed.

Alexious2533d ago

Yeah, releasing this close to so many great RPGs didn't help for sure.

spicelicka2533d ago (Edited 2533d ago )

I don't think being close to other RPG's would have any effect on it though, it wouldn't have been any more critically acclaimed if it released at any other time in the year. It's not like people forget about other RPGs a month after their release.

Only thing that could have hurt are sales which actually weren't that bad.

Smokehouse2533d ago

There was a time when mass effect could have stood toe to toe with those games. That’s no excuse imo. Andromeda was a failed social experiment, a sub studio run by identity politics. Andromeda is the product of pushing activism instead of product and equality instead of talent.

AspiringProGenji2533d ago (Edited 2533d ago )

And even with all that controversy the game sold fine. Imagine if the game lived up to the ME game like it was supposed to? They would not be malking this excuse

I’m sure I would have bought it, but too much red flags was too much to ignore. Game isn’t even worth a sale for me. I won’t have my ME trilogy experience ruined by sloppy work

Smokehouse2533d ago (Edited 2533d ago )

Probably sold decent at first when people thought it was mass effect. I was guilty of this, I’m a huge ME fan and I thought “it really can’t be that bad can it?”. Well yeah it was and I regretfully bought it digital. After launch the player base dropped so fast that they canceled dlc and shut the studio down.

You did the right thing by skipping it. I chanced it and lost big time.

NXFather2533d ago

How should they fix the series. And if you say the A team, then what should the B team have been doing?

ClayRules20122533d ago

Bud, I’m sorry to hear that. Do you often buy video games digitally?

I didn’t buy it. I borrowed it from a friend who bought it on release day. He was so upset he wasted $60 on it. I thought it was really bad & a disgrace to the ME name.

Smokehouse2533d ago (Edited 2533d ago )

I only buy digital games for ones I like and plan on playing more than once. I didn’t think andromeda would be as bad as it was.

It was disgraceful. It just makes it worse when they try to make excuses to why it didn’t do well. If I were them I would just admit the failure and move on, don’t even bring it up anymore. Blaming it on Zelda isn’t fooling anyone.

ClayRules20122533d ago

I agree. It’s disgraceful & shows how they lacked respect, care, passion, and love for the game.

I’d rather admit the failure, move on, and never repeat that again, rather than make excuses. It’s a shame such a beloved & respected series has this awful stain that’s Andromeda.

chris2352533d ago

you know, your admitting it now just makes it all the more despicable. when you very well knew what ToaS you produced and in spite of all its flaws you tried to cash in on it anyway. i will keep my wallet closed firmly if your name should show up anywhere again.

TheCommentator2533d ago

Yeah, to add to that I remember Bioware saying they knew their game sucked after Mass Effect 3 came out too. Hell, they even "fixed it"... lol.

NXFather2533d ago

You saying Anthem will flop?

GrimDragon2533d ago (Edited 2533d ago )

That’s a poor excuse. Although ME released in the same quarter it released nearly a month after nier and horizon. Both of those games in the same month sold very well. Proving that a good game sells regardless of their being better or equally good games. Stop making excuses for the franchise you ruined. Learn to do better next time. Iam confident you can.

I Owe You An Apology, Hideo Kojima, I Wasn't Familiar With Your Game

Hideo Kojima and PlayStation go together like hobbits and breakfasts. That is to say, they're meant to be together, but they're also happy to serve up a PC port or afternoon tea if the time is right. Kojima's long-time collaboration with Sony means it always feels odd to see his name next to an Xbox logo, like Master Chief appearing on your PS5 or glimpsing your teacher in the big Tesco doing her weekly shop.

I feel sorry for this guy and his newly formed studio.

He left XGS and Playground to pursue his multi platform dreams just to find out next that Xbox will be making games for every single platform. Smh.

Lightning772d ago

I don't think it's any of that. Im sure hes heard of Xbox multiplat approach but wanted to do their own thing anyway. He has complete freedom and direction. This game could be a break out hit and join Larian Studios Baldurs Gate and Clair Obscure Expedition 33 a more independent studios.

Tacoboto1d 3h ago

"I would say we're not building Horizon. If I wanted to build Horizon 6, 7 and 8, I would have stayed at Playground"

He didn't want to keep making Horizon. Try reading any article before giving a nod to Microsoft.

I'm glad studios are breaking off from big pubs and doing their own thing.

Making games that are player lead and games that devs want to make and play themselves. This is how it was in the 90's 2000's even early 2010's. That's part of the reason why gaming was better back then. With more independency in the industry we'll have more creative games. Not this formulaic dopamine reward driven systems. But engaging, dynamic and most importantly organically fun to play. Not manufactured fake fun like how it is these days.

Rant over it'll be probably be awhile till we see their game but here's hoping it's good.
